| The EMO style is a combination of punk and hardcore tendencies. The term "emocore" originates from emotional hard-core and dates back to the mid of the Eighties.
The first emos of the subculture began to add melodic elements to their songs. Sadness, love, sense of loneliness are common topics of their tunes. Thus, the emo style could be defined as rock with emotional lyric elements. Yet, the definition of the emo style is still under debate.
Even though the emo subculture was originally considered a music genre, now it is referred not only to music, but also to conduct, fashion, style and the way of life.
The emo style is considered unfashionable. This way emo adherents show that they are not interested in all aspects of society. Emos consider themselves outcasts and, hence, show their neglect of existing social rules and standards through the emo subculture. They prefer skinny jeans, ordinarily in bright colours, and tight-fitting T-shirts, with names of emo groups printed on them. Studded belts and black wristbands are usual accessories in the emo fashion. Piercing is also one of the ways of embellishing the body that is popular among emos. Black Converse sneakers and skate shoes, such as Vans, are usually worn by emo representatives. Some boys also prefer thick black horn-rimmed glasses.
The emo fashion is also famous for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, usually covering one or both eyes. Straightened and dyed black hair is also an emo trend. Hair is typically highlighted blue, pink, red, or bleached blond. At the beginning of the third millennium, the emo fashion was associated with an impeccable look, but as the style spread to youngsters, it became darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black superseding sweater vests.
Emo adherents are very sensitive characters. Psychologists define them as introverts who do not want to interact with the world around. Instead, they demonstrate their standpoints by means of poetry. Poems they compose are full of sorrow, nostalgia and despair. Typically these emotions are typical of teenagers aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally and psychologically unstable. For a great many emo representatives emoism becomes a way of life. |
